I have a close friend who is an alcoholic.
His wife and kids have left their family home, he got demoted at his job, and he calls me to talk about it. Sometimes he is sober, and sometimes he is drunk.
Tonight, I was trying to listen but also give him some tough love advice. He has heard it from me before. This time, he hung up. I'm not sure if he meant to hang up or if he was so drunk he hung up and fell asleep, which is possible. It sounded like he was having a hard time staying awake or putting together thoughts.
I am afraid he is going to die, probably not intentionally, but I have seen others die from alcoholism.
I am sad because he is someone I care about, and he is a smart man and could fix his life, but alcohol has taken hold of him, and all I can do is watch it, because I have no way to help him. He has to help himself. It hurts me that he cannot figure that out.
